Women and Kids Take Biggest Hit in State Budget Cuts
(IRN)-New study results indicated that when state government cuts money from human services, women and children feel the brunt of those cuts.

The Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, in its study called "Gender Disparity in Human Services: The Impact of Illinois' State Budget Cuts on Human Services Supporting Women," claims state government has cut $4.4 billion in human services funding over the last decade.

Yerik Kaslow, principal author of the study, says because women and children use the most human services, it makes sense that cuts would affect them disproportionately. He says the study's numbers now prove that.

The cuts found in the study, from Fiscal Year 2009 to Fiscal Year 2011, are:

Homelessness—44 percent
Family planning—31 percent
Teen parenting—21 percent
Domestic violence—19 percent
Sexual assault—18 percent
Children's services—11 percent

Kaslow explains that even if state government replaced cuts for full funding, many families would still be in trouble because of the cascading effect of these problems. He says, for example, someone who lost his or her home wouldn't be able to return to it because other problems will crop up when a family is homeless.

Kaslow says the only way to keep these services is to pass a tax hike.
