No Bus Decision Yet for Knoxville Schools
There is still no resolution yet for the first big task undertaken by the new superintendent of the Knoxville School District.

The District 202 Board last night voted to table Stephen Wilder's proposal to replace six district-owned buses, with six leased buses, as a way to save the district some money in the long term.

The district received two bids from bus suppliers, Midwest Transit Equipment and Central States Bus Sales, but Wilder says, there's a problem.

"You can't really only go with Midwest transit because they only sell one kind of bus, and we're only trading in two of those buses and we need four more. The board can decide to accept the convention bid from Midwest Transit and the transit bid from Central State, if that makes sense, the board can also just choose to go with Central States."

Wilder referred to the type of busses the district has in its fleet, both transit and conventional school busses -- due in part to space in the district's bus barn. All told, he expects the leases to cost the district over 230-thousand dollars, and that the remainder of the district's fleet would also be rotated out over time.

The board expressed concerns over just how much money the district would save, and whether the district should eventually turn to one type of bus in order to save money on parts and maintenance, all possibly working toward building a bigger bus garage.

A vote is expected to come in January.
