United Way at Two-Thirds of Goal
The head of the Knox County United Way said she hoped her annual fundraising campaign would be done by the end of the year, but that likely won't be the case.

Executive Director Ann Tucker says as of Tuesday, the agency is at two-thirds of its annual fundraising goal or, $235,000 out of $350,000 to be raised.

Tucker tells WGIL she's extended the fundraising deadline one month until the end of January, after learning that some corporate and personal contributions are significantly down.

"People are deciding either not to give or not to give at all or reducing their pledges to us there is just a lot of uncertainty out there and it's unfortunate because now the need is for our community and those individuals that need help."

Tucker says it appears that some businesses and others who have given to the United Way in the past are instead opting to give directly to the member agencies. She says while that's good they're still giving, that only provides a one-time cash infusion to the agency, whereas the United Way funnels money to the agencies year round.

Tucker says she's also considering starting the fundraising campaign earlier next year than she has in the past, to see if that helps.
