State Urges Safety at the Spa
(IRN) -- Manicures and pedicures are one thing. Treatments that affect multiple layers of skin are a totally different thing. That word from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, after it found numerous violations at 11 day and med-spas.

Department spokeswoman Sue Hofer explains that many spa treatments, such as wrinkle removal, chemical peels and varicose vein treatments, require a doctor's supervision. However, she says treatments that affect layers of skin below the surface, treatments that affect other soft tissues of the body, or which are injected or removed from the body, are medical procedures which require direct medical supervision. Under Illinois law, physicians can delegate the actual treatment to an appropriately trained staff member, but the doctor or other health care provider must provide direct, on-site supervision.

She hopes more people will learn about these requirements during the season when many people are visiting a spa, or giving or receiving a gift certificate for spa treatment. Hofer recommends that if you're interested in a spa treatment, find out which services require a doctor's supervision, and then make sure you chose a day or med-spa that does, in fact, have a doctor on-site when necessary.
