SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Officials have appointed a Maryland city council member as the executive director of the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

George Reid starts the job in Illinois next week.

Education officials announced the appointment on Thursday.

Reid was an assistance secretary of planning and academic affairs at the Maryland Higher Education Commission. He lives in Glenarden, Maryland, where he is serving his second term on the city council.

Reid served as the president of Kentucky State University from 1998 to 20002.

He holds a Ph.D. in African and African-American history from Howard University.

The Illinois Board of Higher Education was created in 1961 to coordinate the state's higher education system.
