Officers Increase Patrols for Holiday Weekend
CHICAGO (AP) -- Authorities across Illinois are gearing up for a busy holiday travel weekend with increased patrols for drunk driving.

Officials with Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation say they'll be working together to make sure everyone has a safe holiday season.

Transportation Department Secretary Gary Hannig says people who drink and drive will face costs they can never repay, like severe injury or the loss of life. He added that the monetary costs are high, too.

Authorities say a DUI arrest in Illinois can cost around $19,000 with hospital bills of more than $70,000.

The beefed-up patrols this weekend include more than 100 roadside safety checks and more than 200 late-night safety belt enforcement zones.
