Veteran Gives Home to Fellow Vet for Christmas
ROSEWOOD HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) -- One southwest Illinois veteran will spend Christmas in the first home he's owned because of generosity from a fellow soldier.

Steve Brown was renting a room at Oak Ridge Trailer Park in Rosewood Heights when he found out the owner of the trailer was going to sell.

Brown faced being out on the streets.

That's when Retired Army Sergeant Frederick Evanik decided to deed his home to Brown. Evanik is gravely ill with lung cancer and is being hospitalized.

Both men served in Vietnam, but didn't meet until a few years ago.

Brown, who turned 63 this week, considers the trailer a birthday and Christmas gift. He plans to move in Friday.

In keeping with the holiday spirit, he plans to someday give the home to someone else in need.
