Jobless Figures Down in Galesburg, Up in Other Areas
The Illinois Department of Employment Security has essentially given its Christmas present to the Galesburg area, but for some parts of the region, that gift is more like a lump of coal.

First, the good news. The state says in figures released Thursday that the City of Galesburg's Unemployment Average for November is 9.2%, down four-tenths from the figure in October.

In all of Knox County, the jobless average went down the same percentage, and is now sitting at 8.7%. Combine that with a virtually-unchanged 7.7% figure in Warren County, and the state's combined Galesburg-area Unemployment average now sits at 8.4%.

The state says non-farm payrolls were lower by about 775 fewer positions in the year-over-year period, with losses in retail trade jobs offset by an equal amount of gains in Education-Health Services.

But, the bad news. Not all unemployment figures were lower last month in the area.

Fulton County's went up two-tenths of a percent to 10.5% Henderson County's went up three-tenths to 7.9%. And, while small in population, Stark County's went up seven-tenths to 9.2%.
