Northern IL Airport Offers Direct Mexico Flights
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) -- Northern Illinois winter blues got you down? The Chicago Rockford International Airport officials say they may have a solution.

The airport will start up non-stop flights to Cancun, Mexico, again starting on Sunday. The flights will be offered up to three times a week during peak travel times.

Airport officials have often portrayed the airport as an attractive alternative to both of Chicago's busy airports, promoting free parking, little traffic and even a speedy U.S. Customs process. Still, some Chicagoans have been skeptical since it's 90 miles northwest of the city.

State officials say the airport employs 4,000 people and generates $1.1 billion annually.

It is home to one of the nation's largest United Parcel Service sorting facilities.
