Tragedy Turns Parents Into Successful Activists
CHICAGO (AP) -- A devastating tragedy has turned a Chicago couple into crusading activists against Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy, or SUDEP.

SUDEP claims at least 3,000 lives yearly. It took Mike and Mariann Stanton's 4-year-old boy Danny last December. Since then, the Stantons have brought remarkable attention to SUDEP.

They started the Danny Did Foundation in January, which has more than 10,000 Facebook followers. They've distributed thousands of informational brochures and raised nearly $300,000 in funds for awareness and research.

Their biggest coup is getting epilepsy researchers in Chicago to launch the first rigorous study of a device for detecting seizures during sleep. The study to launch early next year will investigate if it really works and can save lives.
