Experts Move on to Next Phase of Light Bulb Energy Efficiency
(IRN)-First if was the phasing out of typical incandescent light bulbs. And while they're still not totally gone, one state official says the focus is on replacing older florescent light fixtures.

The federal government says by 2012, what are called T-12 lamps must be phased out, and higher efficiency T-5 or T-8 lamps must be put in their place.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity has a program that can help taxpayer supported entities. Deputy Director Jonathan Feipel says it's called "Illinois Energy Now" that offers incentives toward replacement.

"What this special did is to really encourage all public sector entities, municipalities, schools, community colleges, universities to come in and take advantage of higher incentive rates than we typically offer."

Help for flourescent lamp replacement is available through mid-April of next year, and more information can be found at IllinoisEnergy.org.

State officials say about a third of all fluorescent lamps sold are still of the T-12 variety.
