Recession Over, but Still Long Way to Go
(IRN)-The economic news to you might be as near as your own pocket. The recession is technically over, but not everybody is feeling flush.

Fred Giertz, an economics professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, tracks the numbers as part of his monthly Flash Index. Overall, the economy is "a lot better than it was two years ago," he says. "There was a financial panic, and there was at least a moderate possibility that you might have a real catastrophic sort of event occurring, and the credit markets would freeze up … on the other hand, if you are a person who still has your job, you are probably relatively happy … and if you don't have a job, it's a much bleaker kind of picture."

Warren Ribley, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, says re-training is still very much a part of the picture, with people having to learn new skills to stay employable. Ribley says jobs can still be found in health care, information technology, and green manufacturing.
