Plans for Higher IL Lottery Sales
(IRN)-The Illinois lottery plans to boost sales by increasing the number of retail outlets that sell tickets.

A private company, Northstar Lottery Group, is supposed to take over the operation of the lottery in the middle of next year, and increasing the dealer base is a priority.

The lottery now has about 7,300 dealers, and Northstar wants to have about 11,000, including in retail establishments that rarely are lottery sellers now, such as pharmacies and bog box stores. Northstar is also expected to institute internet sales.

The deal with Northstar includes a new computer system that will make lottery sales less of a hassle for retailers, says acting lottery superintendent Jodie Winnett.

Northstar, which is to take over lottery management but is not taking over the revenue stream, is promising the state $1.2 billion in new lottery profits over the next five years. The state will allocate some of that money to education, and the rest to the state's construction program.
