New Year's Eve Festivities Planned? Drink Smart
(IRN)-New Year's Eve is Friday night. If you're planning to "tie one on," an expert has some tips about how to keep from getting plastered, and how to prevent a nasty hangover.

Ron Kanwischer, a resident substance abuse counselor at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, says you can slow the absorption of alcohol by eating a full meal before drinking, nibbling high-fat foods (such as cheese or nuts) while drinking, sticking with light-colored alcohol, and, of course, drinking slowly.

Kanwischer says New Year's Eve is one of the top 10 drinking nights. Super Bowl Sunday and Halloween are also in the top 10.

As for getting behind the wheel, Kanwischer says it's just smarter to save $10 in your pocket and use it for a cab ride home.

According to the Illinois Secretary of State's Office, the state logged six crash fatalities during the 2009 New Year’s holiday, three of which were alcohol related (50 percent). In 2008, the holiday included 10 crash fatalities, three of which were alcohol-related (30 percent.)
