Northeast Snowstorm Causing Chicago Headaches
(IRN)-The effects of the major snowstorm in the Northeast are still being felt around here.

O’Hare Airport is where the problems are, with at least eight international flights that were destined for New York and New Jersey being diverted to O’Hare. The number of passengers stranded at O’Hare is about 1,700, some of whom will be stuck until the weekend.

Getting out is a problem, says Bob Harrell, an airline industry consultant, who says this is a busy travel period any many flights are booked full or nearly full anyway, so there are few seats available to re-book passengers whose flights were cancelled.

Harrell says over the next few days, passengers whose outbound flights were cancelled will give up on their trips entirely, leaving some space open for returning passengers.

A German couple left Germany on Monday with plans to celebrate New Year's Eve on the Hudson River on a boat. Instead they're in Chicago, planning to fly to Pittsburgh to start a seven-hour bus ride to New York.

Travelers Aid volunteers, who collectively speak about 25 languages, are helping the passengers get cots and blankets at O’Hare, or off-airport accommodations.
