White Urges Partygoers to be Safe on Roads
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is reminding holiday partygoers to designate a sober driver and buckle their safety belts.

White is urging people not to drink and drive. And wearing a safety belt is a motorist's best defense against someone else who is driving drunk.

The Illinois Department of Transportation reported that during the 2009 New Year's holiday, there were six fatal crashes, three of which involved alcohol.

In 2008, there were ten fatal crashes, with three involving alcohol.
White says secretary of state police will be patrolling the roadways this weekend and conducting drunken driving and seatbelt checks with the Illinois State Police and IDOT.
