Abingdon Applies for Energy Efficiency Grant
Add the Abingdon School District to the list of school districts in the area looking to get state money to improve energy efficiency.

District 217 Superintendent Tami Roskamp says the district is applying for its own $120,000 grant for energy efficiency projects in the district, the grant is similar to ones the Knoxville and Galesburg School District are also applying for through the Knox County Regional Office of Education that will be provided by the state.

Roskamp tells WGIL new lights, doors, and windows are among the projects planned for in their quarter-million dollar plan.

"We have an energy management system, electronic system we need to update, and their going to put new lights in the gym, energy efficient with censers instead of the mercury lights because those all have to come on together and it's big power surge. So we'll get more efficient lights in the gym. We also want to replace the lights in the Hedding gym, our multi-purpose room. Then we have already replaced the doors at Hedding so we need to replace the doors at the middle high school to be more efficient because there's a lot of air that escapes that way and then work on the windows."

Roskamp says several of the projects, especially the replacement of lights in the high school gym, will pay for themselves in three years. She says just how much will get done depends on whether or not the grant is actually received, and whether or not the state actually pays up.
