Phase 1 of Master Facilities Plan Outlined
The Galesburg School Board later this month will be asked to sign off on the first phase of work to be done under the district's $110 million master facilities plan.

The board held a Committee of the Whole meeting to discuss the phase one projects last night. Among other things, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations, Guy Cahill, says the first phase would include work at Galesburg High School, Lincoln, Lombard, and Steele Schools, along with the beginning of conversion to a geo-thermal heating and cooling system.

One change in the plan is how to pay for it. While proceeds from the newly-passed one-percent sales tax increase would help pay off bonds, Cahill says none of the work now relies on state or federal funding, with some surpluses in districts funds helping to cover the costs.

"There are assets one way or the other, we're basically going to take a liquid asset that would fall to the bottom line and turn it into a hard asset."

Some board members, however, were not in favor of some of the project in phase one nonetheless. Member Mike Panther, for example, questioned the need to replace bleachers and lighting at VanDyke Field, and also questioned why Lincoln needs to be converted back to classrooms, after being converted into administrative offices.

The Galesburg School Board will vote on aspects of getting the ball rolling on phase one December 13th.
