IL Officials Urging Caution on Snowmobiles
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois officials are urging snowmobile riders to take safety courses, wear protective equipment, know the terrain and travel in groups of two or more when taking to the snowy fields this winter.

The Department of Natural Resources says three people died in 39 accidents reported last winter. There were seven fatalities among 66 accidents in 2007-08.

Alcohol played a role in more than half of fatalities.
Officials say riders should be familiar with their machines and wear helmets and face shields. Check out unfamiliar terrain with someone who's traveled it and stay off ice if its thickness is unknown. Know the weather forecast, never travel alone and drive at a safe rate of speed.

Snowmobilers aged 12 to 15 must complete an eight hour safety course.
