2 Prosecutors Want Public to Support Death Penalty
PEKIN, Ill. (AP) -- Two central Illinois prosecutors want to start the New Year by drumming up public support for retaining the death penalty in Illinois.

Tazewell County State's Attorney Stewart Umholtz and Peoria County State's Attorney Kevin Lyons say they are concerned that political maneuvering in the Illinois General Assembly may abolish the state's death penalty law without public input.

Umholtz and Lyons tell the Pekin Daily Times that they are asking residents in their counties to call local legislators and tell them not to support what they call a politically motivated effort to circumvent the will of the people.

Umholtz and Lyons say opponents of the death penalty contend that natural life without parole is an adequate punishment, yet some of them also worked to pass legislation that would allow compassionate release parole to all inmates, including murderers.
