Business Fire Among Top Local Stories
You'd never would have known there was a fire at a Henderson Street business just months after a fire could have destroyed it.

One of our top stories of 2010 was the fire at Northgate Lanes in Galesburg. Firefighters were called there around 6:30am January 13th for a blaze that had started in the southeast corner of the business. It was brought under control in about 30 minutes, though crews were on the scene for hours.

Then Galesburg Fire Battalion Chief Todd Peterson told WGIL at the time, while the fire was nearly routine, there was one big problem: a roof top air conditioner that was on the verge of collapse.

"The fire obviously was right underneath where that thing is collapsing under, that's where we're looking for hidden fires so we're having to keep guys in a safe area away from where that's collapsing in so we're going to have figure out a way to knock out the rest of the fire and keep our guys safe at the same time."

No one was hurt. Temporary repairs were made, and Northgate was re-opened March first, just in time for a state bowling tournament to be held.

The alley closed in mid-May through most of the summer, re-opening in August, nearly as good as new, with still some work to be done.

The Northgate Fire was one of several that happened between last Christmas and the end of January, one occurring on one of the coldest days of this year.
