Kirk Gives GOP Radio Address
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Illinois' newest senator says Congress shouldn't move forward with policies that the American people just rejected.

Republican Sen. Mark Kirk was sworn in as a replacement to Democratic Sen. Roland Burris on Monday.

Kirk says the top priorities of the lame-duck Congress should be to reduce spending and "prevent another tax hike on American taxpayers." He says that message was delivered by voters in November.

Congress is currently debating whether to renew Bush-era tax cuts. Kirk says there's no question the tax cuts should be renewed. Democrats and newly empowered Republicans have been going back and forth on the issue. The White House has signaled it may be open to a compromise.

Kirk made his comments in the Republican National Committee's weekly message, which was released on Saturday.
