Moffitt: Veto Session Dealt Little With Vetoes
A local representative says lawmakers dropped the ball during the fall veto session.

"The immediate issue is paying our bills, paying our schools, paying our vendors, paying our providers. And that was not addressed. I thought we should be doing that. Or, even if there was special session just for that purpose. That's what we should be devoting our time to. Then, we have all spring to address these other issues. Not that we wouldn't address them, but I thought our first priority should be the financial condition of the state."

Gilson Republican Don Moffitt says the veto session is meant to examine bills the Governor as vetoed, but little of that was done.

Instead, larger issues like medical marijuana and civil unions saw action in the House and Senate.

Moffitt feels by voting on those bills now, it's circumventing the election because newly elected officials chosen by voters in November have no voice until the spring session begins.

More veto session days have been scheduled in January and Moffitt suspects an income tax increase could be top item discussion.

Moffitt voted against civil unions, because he feels that's the will of most of his constituents; he voted against medical marijuana because of discussions he says he's had with pharmacists and law enforcement officials.
