43 Citations Given for Parking in Accessible Spots
CHICAGO (AP) -- The Illinois Secretary of State's office says it's cracking down on motorists who park in accessible spaces meant for the disabled.

The office said Tuesday that over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend 43 tickets were issued statewide to those who illegally parked at local malls in suburban Chicago, Aurora, Bloomington, Carbondale, Effingham, Fairview Heights, Peoria, Peru, Rockford and Springfield. Officials say police checked more than 500 driver's licenses and placards at the malls before issuing the citations and confiscating 14 disability placards.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White says the goal was to make sure the accessible parking spaces were available for those who needed them. Enforcement is to continue throughout the holiday season. The fine for parking in an accessible spot without permission can be as high as $350.
