GOP Says More Cuts Before Tax Hike
(IRN)-If Republicans in Springfield have their way, the governor will have to look at additional ways to trim the state's budget before an income tax hike is seriously considered.

Slashing budgets at most or all state agencies may be the final outcome before Republicans agree to increasing taxes. One of the largest state offices, the secretary of state's office, could see its share of cuts.

Secretary of State Jesse White says while he wouldn't want to see more cost cutting in his office, but he would do so if the governor directed him to.

"I just hope they won't look to this office, but if by chance they happen to look to this office, we will have to do all we can to make sure that we continue to function as a viable part of state government," White said.

White says his office has already saved money by reducing the number of department cars, implementing furlough days, cutting down on mailings and implementing cross-training of staff.

Governor Pat Quinn has previously said that he wouldn't support additional cuts to education or public safety, but says he is open to discuss any idea lawmakers come up with to get the state out of billions in debt.
