Fumigation Bill Won Senate, Needs House Approval
(IRN)-A bill to sweep potentially hundreds of top government staffers out of office has won Republican support, but still needs a vote in the Illinois House.

On the last day of the Veto Session, the state Senate passed a measure to force appointees to leave office, or be re-appointed by the governor, which triggers a Senate confirmation hearing. That measure was proposed by Senate President John Cullerton. With Republican support, it was passed unanimously.

The bill would impact more than 700 positions that are appointed, but about 150 of those positions are currently vacant. "We can't have a system where people can just hold over, and the governor can ignore us," Cullerton said during the Senate debate on the bill.

Senate Minority Leader Christine Rodogno encouraged her caucus to vote yes. She said, "It's important that we, as the Senate, have the opportunity to do what we are elected to do, and that is to confirm appointments, and require that the administration come before us so we have the opportunity to vet those appointments." The measure now has to wait until the lame duck session in January for House consideration.
