Multi-district Charter School a No Go in General Assembly
(IRN)-A multi-district charter school would be an innovation for Illinois and possibly the nation, according to its backers, but the idea has failed in the General Assembly.

The Aurora West, East Aurora, Indian Prairie, and Oswego districts would have participated in the Aurora University project, had the bill passed. The sponsor, State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, found herself fending off criticism both from Chicago and Downstate lawmakers.

State Representative Will Burns said the idea is well-intentioned but could ultimately "undermine the intention of charter schools, which is to be an option for all children."

Chapa LaVia suggested those against the bill are simply in the pockets of teachers unions.

H.B. 6862 failed in the House, 55-39-4. It needed 60 Yes votes to pass.
