Water and Garbage Rates Again on City Agenda
Water and garbage rates for Galesburg residents could again be on the way up if the Galesburg City Council has their way.

The City Council Monday night will consider increasing the average garbage bill about $1.74 to $45 a quarter, and water rates an average of 11 percent per user.

City officials say a four percent increase is built into the garbage contract with Waste Management, and rates at the Knox County Landfill are going up as well; hence the need for the increase on garbage bills.

On the other half of the bill, city officials say, water rates have been discussed in city council work sessions earlier this year, with a goal of minimizing any increase as much as possible, while covering expenditures now that, among other things, the city's construction of a new water treatment plant at Oquawka is complete.

They say the increase proposed for 2011 is actually less, however, than the 2010 increase the city council imposed.

The city compared an average $64 water bill with that of other communities, and officials say the city's rate is still near the bottom of the list, much lower than even Oak Run.

The Galesburg City Council will deal with those issues, a final 2011 budget, and the contact for newly-selected City Manager Todd Thompson when they convene at 6:30 tonight at City Hall.
