Local Attorney to Run for City Council
FIRST REPORTED 5:50am 12/6/10 A Galesburg attorney says he wants a seat on the Galesburg City Council being vacated with the April election.

Jeremy Karlin formally announced yesterday he's running for the seat representing the 7th Ward. Current alderman Mike Lummis has decided not to seek another term.

Karlin tells WGIL the root of many of the city's economic development-related problems right now is population decline and he's got an idea of how to work on that.

"I call it a population plan to retain individuals who currently live here, as well as encouraging individuals, particularly families, to move to Galesburg. I think the greatest problem the city is facing is population decline. Currently the census estimates our 2009 population at 31,000."

And Karlin says the city hasn't seen a population that low in decades.

Karlin is currently representing accused spree killer Nicholas Sheley in his local murder case, and says his run for council will not affect the case, nor will any time he spends working on the murder case affect his ability to be alderman.

Karlin says he's collecting signatures now so he can officially get on the ballot.
