January Veto Session Could Bring Tax Hike, Balanced Budget
(IRN)-As we expect those bills after the holidays, think about this: a tax increase of some sort in Illinois.

House Republican and Democratic leaders say the days recently added to the session calendar will be used to try to get closer to a balanced budget. "As Hawk Harrelson says when he starts the White Sox games," State Representative Joe Lyons said, "hunker down and buckle up!"

The House is scheduled to meet almost every day between Jan. 3 and the swearing-in day for the new General Assembly Jan. 12. The Senate also has some days scheduled the first week of January.

State Representative Mark Beaubien reminds us that bills passed in January need only a simple majority of 60 votes in the House and 30 in the Senate. Also, he says, a number of lawmakers are lame ducks, leaving the General Assembly, and thus won't have to face voters again.
