Knox County Board Chair Elected to Another Term
FIRST REPORTED 5:50am 12/7/10 The Chairman of the Knox County Board will stay the same at least for another two years.

The board Monday night elected Greg Bacon to his second term as chair, defeating Republican Wayne Saline on an eight to five vote.

Bacon has run the county board through some of the most trying times in recent memory, given the budget situation, the recent layoffs, and the cutting in hours of employees at the Knox County Nursing Home.

And Bacon tells WGIL those layoffs almost led him to wanting to step down as chair.

"When I signed those layoff slips, that was the hardest thing I've had to do in my political life, so I mean, I didn't take it lightly. I know the people that I was signing so I don't like that part of it, I hope I never have to do that again."

Bacon says, however, he's pleased with how his first two years have gone, and said he has a great board to work with, so he'll keep pressing along. He says he'd like to see the state actually pay its bills, and he'd also like to finally see a resolution to the issue of what to do with the aging Knox County Courthouse.

District-One Democrat Lyle Johnson was elected to a term as Vice-Chairman of the County Board, and new District-Four Republican Shawn Pittman took his oath of office during Monday night's reorganizational meeting.
