Library Gets Its Tax Levy
After nearly an hour of discussion, the Galesburg Public Library finally got what it was looking for Monday night.

City council members voted in favor of raising the library's tax levy by about $54,000 to just over $1.3 million.

7th Ward Alderman Mike Lummis proposed the levy increase and says the council had a goal to keep taxes level, and he believes they still accomplished it.

"This council sitting at the township board reduced the levy on the township taxes around $45,000 to $50,000 because the township is doing a good job of governing over there. In my mind anyway that reduction of taxes coupled with this very slight increase for the library still holds pretty true to what I told taxpayers I would try to do."

The increased tax levy would mean about four dollars more per year on the property tax bills of a house valued at $100,000.

The amended library tax levy was approved by a 5 to 3 margin with Alderman Wayne Allen, Russell Fleming, and Ken Goad voting against it.

The property tax levy as a whole, which includes the general fund, pensions, and other categories were not changed and will remain flat for next year. That was approved by a vote of 6 to 2 with Fleming and Goad providing the no votes.
