District 205 Officials Expect No Change to Property Taxes in 2012
The District 205 board of education has approved an 18.8-million dollar tax levy that's keeps in line a current trend for property taxes.

Assistant Superintendent Guy Cahill says the board's action last month to abate two portions of the levy and it's passage Monday night should equate to a $4.20 tax rate.

He says this is unchanged from the previous two years. However, Cahill tells WGIL some homeowners may see their tax bills decrease.

"If the value of a person's home did not change, their bill may actually go down," he said. "In part, certain seniors for example, may qualify for certain exemptions this year. You may have made an improvement to your home and qualify for a tax credit."

There will be some people who may see lower tax bills because of actions they've made, or just for living a year longer."

Cahill says if homeowners have made additions to their property they will most likely see an increase in their property tax bill.

He says farmland values have gone up, and should fill the gap with the slide in residential values.
