Sheley Sentence Stands
A Knox County Judge has denied a request to have the sentence accused spree killer Nicholas Sheley got for a local death he was convicted of committing changed.

Knox County Circuit Court records indicate Judge James Stewart Wednesday denied a motion to reconsider the sentence.

Sheley was convicted of First-Degree Murder for the June 2008 bludgeoning death of 65-year old Ronald Randall, and was sentenced last month to life in prison.

He was given concurrent sentences of 30 years for Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking, and seven years for Possession of a Stolen Vehicle.

In the motion for reconsideration, defense attorney Jeremy Karlin claimed the sentence was excessive given the nature of the crimes and because of Sheley's character, and because evidence of other crimes was brought up during the sentencing hearing.

Sheley remains charged with five deaths in Whiteside County, and two in Missouri, all believed to have committed around the same time.

Court officials say Karlin intends to file an appeal of the ruling by the end of the month.

Attempts to reach Karlin have so far been unsuccessful.
