A Change of Venue Motion Again for Accused Spree Killer
Accused spree killer Nicholas Sheley apparently thinks he can't get a fair trial in Whiteside County either.

The Sterling "Daily Gazette" reports Sheley's attorney, Jeremy Karlin of Galesburg, filed a motion in Whiteside County Circuit Court Thursday, asking for a change of venue for the first of several murder trials expected there.

Sheley will be tried first for the death of 93-year old Russell Reed of Sterling, one of eight deaths he's suspected of committing in late-June of 2008.

The "Gazette" reports Karlin claims pre-trial publicity in Whiteside County was, according to the motion, highly prejudicial, overwhelming, and unprecedented.

Those are words Karlin used in motions for a new trial in the Knox County case -- motions that were unsuccessful. A jury several months ago found Sheley guilty of the murder of 65-year old Ronald Randall. This week, a sentence of life in prison was ordered not to be reconsidered.

14th Circuit Chief Judge Jeffrey O'Connor has said he intends to try the case of the Reed death in Whiteside County if at all possible. A date has not yet been set on the motion for a change of venue.

Karlin has already been denied a request to take a telephone poll of potential jurors in Whiteside County.
