No Promotion for City Employee
The Galesburg City Council didn't agree unanimously on much of the city budget, except for pretty much one item.

Aldermen nearly unanimously rejected last week the city's salary ordinance for 2012. Most of the discussion centered around a proposal to upgrade the city's Human Resources Director to a position of Assistant City Manager dealing with human resources and other items that city manager Todd Thompson says would allow the burden on him to be lessened.

Aldermen didn't say much about the plan, but resident Mike Kroll did.

"To upgrade this position and increase this extra cost in light of the rest of the budget would simply be rubbing salt into the wounds of what is already an irresponsible budget," Kroll said. "And I strongly suggest that we not spend the extra money to upgrade this position."

The Assistant City Manager/ Human Resources position would get about a $20,000 raise in pay with the revamped position, taking it up to about $60,000 a year. Thompson told aldermen that would have put the salary more in line with what other human resources directors make.

The vote on the proposed salary ordinance was zero-to-seven.

Alderman Jeremy Karlin abstained from voting.
