Fiber Optic Line Coming to Knoxville
A Tulsa-based engineering firm has partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation to upgrade telecommunication services between Peoria and Macomb.

Golden Field Services will be installing an underground fiber optic line and the city of Knoxville is along the proposed route of connectivity.

Mayor Pro Tem Bob Johnson says there's one aspect of the project alderman can dictate.

"We don't have any choice on whether they're going to put the fiber optic in, the only choice we have is whether they put it down in a residential district or a business district," Johnson said last night. "And they're planning on doing this if the weather holds in March."

Johnson says a residential district would be more suitable because there would be less interference and congestion in the business district. Alderman agreed North Street would be more ideal than US-150.

But the council wants to develop an agreement with Golden Field Services ensuring they will repair any damage from tearing up the grounds. Alderman also would like to further discuss how the telecommunications upgrade will directly benefit their community.

Johnson says he intends to have a representative from the company at an upcoming city council meeting.
