Local Lawmaker Says More Work Needed on Business Tax Deal
A deal worked out that could have provided incentives for Sears and C-M-E Group to stay in Illinois didn't work in the Illinois legislature, but one local lawmaker says that doesn't mean it's the end of the issue.

State Representative Don Moffitt says the threats of departure by the two firms was due to the increase in corporate income taxes passed last year. He says he expects some sort of revamped measure to turn up soon, and for lawmakers to be called back into session again to consider it.

Moffitt tells WGIL while the legislation is needed to keep those two entities in the state, it's not needed with some of the other things found in it.

"There was an incentive to give some tax breaks for anyone hiring convicted felons," Moffit said. "That just didn't go very well with many of the legislators, including myself. There was something called earned income tax credit, where you can get a deduction."

However, Moffitt says that increase was so small that it would have done more for big business than the average household.

He says the House speaker has left open the possibility to go back into session sometime before Christmas to take the tax package back up.
