School District 202 Officials Weigh in on Air Conditioning for Mable Woolsey
An engineering firm has left the District 202 Board of Education with options for installing air conditioning at Knoxville's elementary school.

McDonough Associates surveyed Mable Woolsey earlier in the month, and concluded only a rooftop unit or a boiler-based fan system would best accommodate the school.

The district's licensed civil engineer Shane Larson says the boilers become expendable with a rooftop system.

"The biggest advantage to that would be you get rid of the boiler that's down there, because that's going to be heating and cooling," Larson said. "The other option would be option C, is actually a more efficient unit, the cost is right there."

"But you are going to maintain your existing boiler system, that's going to remain part of the system."

Larson says that other option is called a Variable Refrigerant Flow System. He says the existing boilers are in good shape, but in the long run more maintenance would be necessary with future upkeep.

Some board members say they don't believe the roof would structurally hold a rooftop air conditioning and gas heating unit.

The board agreed to table the issue Monday and will continue to evaluate their options.
