Overpass Project Making Progress
They may be three weeks behind in the eyes of the contractor, but Galesburg's City Engineer says Galesburg's first overpass is still on schedule for completion next September.

Wayne Carl says mother nature will soon stall work on the overpass, but that was factored into the initial plans. He says paperwork issues on bids had already delayed construction.

But as Carl tells the WGIL Morning News, plenty has been accomplished since West Main Street's groundbreaking.

"All the difficult underground issues with the storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water main -- all those things you can't see -- there's where you usually run into a lot of your unknown costs," Carl said. "We've got a lot of those done now, so we get some of the easier things. The walls are coming up. You actually see something being constructed instead of just looking like destruction."

Once the brutal temperatures do hit, Carl says all of the work will most likely come to a standstill.

He says there may be some driving of the piling that supports the bridge during that time, with hopes of a warm week to work more material into the ground.
