Shutdown Time for Overpass Construction Crews
Galesburg's City Engineer says work on the the city's first overpass has come to a halt.

Wayne Carl says it's that time of the year for construction crews to stop where they are with the West Main Street Overpass Project, and to pick up where they left off in early March.

He says the contractor's been lucky with the weather thus far. Even with recent paarticipation, Carl tells the WGIL Morning News significant progress has been made.

"We've got the base part of the retaining walls put in on the east side of the railroad tracks," Carl said. "We have the footing put in on the west side."

"We hoped to get a little bit further on the west side before we shut down but that rain kind of set us back last week."

And Carl says that footing require's thirty 14-inch steel shells to be driven into the ground on each side of the railroad tracks.

He says come springtime, it should only be three weeks before the embankment is complete and the walls are able to be constructed.

All utility work underneath the ground was completed according to the engineer.
