Farm Bureau President Reacts to ADM Change of Heart
"Very much a positive."

That's how Knox County Farm Bureau president Ted Mottaz reacted when he learned that Decatur-based Archer Daniels Midland would not be leaving the Galesburg area after all.

ADM announced last week it would be turning its now-closed oilseed processing plant on Galesburg's south side into an elevator capable of storing a million bushels or more of grain.

Mottaz told the WGIL Midday ADM is very much necessary in the area.

"We definitely need that outlet," Mottaz said, "not only for agriculture, for marketing our beans, but every job we can maintain in Galesburg is very, very important."

Mottaz admits he doesn't know all the details of ADM's decision, but is sure there were plenty of people working behind the scenes to make ADM, in his words, recant.

He says he thought ADM used the Galesburg plant as efficiently as it could until it couldn't anymore, until it decided to figure out a re-use for it.

Five of the 31 people laid off when the oilseed plant closed are being given the opportunity to come back to work.
