Galesburg Safe for Now from Sears and K-Mart Closures
Half the anchor stores at Galesburg's Sandburg Mall are safe, now that they're not being targeted for closure by their parent company -- at least, not yet.

Hoffman Estates-based Sears Holdings Company Thursdayreleased the list of the first 79 stores they intend on closing as part of a total of 120 closures of Sears and K-Mart stores they want to shutter due to declining sales.

No stores in the State of Illinois are on the list -- meaning, the Sears and K-Mart stores at Galesburg's Sandburg Mall aren't closing.

Many of the stores closing are specialty Sears and other type stores, but there are a number of Sears and K-Mart traditional stores on the list as well.

The closest closure to the Knox County area is the K-Mart store on Kimberly Road in Davenport.

That would leave another K-Mart store on Blackhawk Road in Rock Island open as well.

Sears Holdings recently was guaranteed $15 Million in tax breaks over 10 years in order to keep them from leaving Hoffman Estates and taking 4,200 jobs with them.

No word on when the remainder of the closures might be announced.
