Free Cab Service Being Offered New Year's Eve
The city of Galesburg will be providing "Alert Cab" for an 18th straight year to help adults bring in the new year responsibly.

Adam Vitale is general manager of G & M Distributors, one of the sponsoring businesses for the free cab rides New Year's Eve.

Vitale tells the WGIL Morning News the process is simple for party-goers to hitch a ride from Checker Cab.

"All a patron needs to do that evening is go up to the bartender and ask them, the bartender can call a cab for them," he said. "There'll be a cab right in front of the bar, a Checker Cab will come pick them up. It will take them anywhere in the city of Galesburg for free. If you're going outside city limits, you don't start paying until you get outside the city limits of Galesburg."

"So it's a program where we want people to enjoy New Year's Eve, have fun, and be safe."

The free cab rides at participating restaurants and bars will be made available from 11pm SAturday night until 3am Sunday morning.

According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, drunk-driving fatalities have decreased 60-percent in Illinois since 1982.
