Shoveling Out a Top Story of the Year
A weather event we'd probably like to forget is one we remembered for our list of top stories of 2011.

A snowstorm the likes of which the area hasn't seen in a long time enveloped the area in February, dropping roughly two-feet of snow across western and central Illinois. It literally shut down most of Galesburg for a day, despite the fact that the storm did worse damage in Northern Illinois, shutting down Chicago's Lake Shore Drive.

Residents knew the big one was coming, though.

"Reminds me of when I was a kid, I can remember those old winters."

That's Sheri Wells of Galesburg, who told WGIL in February she was plenty prepared in case the power went out.

"To prepare, well, we've got candles, I don't know if I'm going to use them or not. We've got kerosene lamps, radios with batteries in them."

The blizzard that brought all that snow was nearly a distant memory by the summer, where a drought of sorts had set in hampering the progress of farmers getting through the harvest season.

There were no major reports of damage following the February storm.
