A Presidential Feel to this Top Story of the Year
A stop in Galesburg for the commander and chief makes our list of top stories for 2011.

President Barack Obama surprised many when his motorcade pulled into Galesburg High School the afternoon of August 17.

"We saw a whole bunch of police cars and a big bus drive by, and one of the guys got a call that said it was the president," she said. "So we took our pictures real fast and sprinted out here."

That's Silver Streak volleyball player Emily Camper, who joined her varsity teammates for a more desirable yearbook photo with the president.

Ray Mendez was passing on his bike when the motorcade began to fill the west lot. He says Obama spoke candidly with him after gathering with the football team.

"He says to the crowd, 'Oh the football team wanted me to suit up but I'm too thin," Mendez said. "And I said 'well it looks like you can still play,' and he kind of joked about it."

Around 75 people lined the entrance to Van Dyke Field to greet Obama.

Following his brief stop at the high school, he traveled to Alpha for a scheduled town hall meeting.
