Curbside Ban on Electronics Effective Next Month
A new law affecting landfills across the state will prohibit many electronics from being picked up by your local garbage collectors curbside.

Associate Planner for the City of Galesburg Julie Main says it will be effective on January 1st.

She tells the WGIL Morning News the recycling initiative has already been expanded to include more than just computers, televisions and printers.

"Your mouse from your computer, video game consoles, think of all those video games kids have," Main said. "Scanners, digital converter boxes, cable or satellite recievers, DVD recorders or players. and a small-scale computer servers. These are all items you can't put on the curb for disposal. And that's not just for residents, that also affects all the businesses too."

Main says the ban also includes fax machines, keyboards, and digital music players.

She says there's a residential drop off at Galesburg Transit for those items listed on the ban on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9am to 3pm. Businesses can schedule for their electronics to be picked up through a Macomb-based collection facility for a small fee.

According to Main, the ban came about due to public health concerns with the presence of heavy metals in many electronics.
