Local Lawmaker Reacts to Blagojevich Conviction
A local lawmaker says he thought Ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich would get a slightly stronger sentence, but 14 years in prison still sends an important message.

State Representative Don Moffitt -- who says he entered the Illinois General Assembly the same time as Blagojevich -- says he thought the sentence would be at least 20 years, and is surprised the maximum wasn't imposed.

Moffitt tells WGIL Blagojevich deserved some sort of harsh punishment.

"Rod Blagojevich broke that trust with the citizens of Illinois," Moffitt said. "Holding an elective office is public trust and he broke that trust. I think the message here is no one's above the law, even if you're governor, you break the law, there's going to be a price to pay."

The Gilson Republican says the Blagojevich he knew back when they were in Springfield together wasn't one that he ever thought would become governor. He says Blagojevich had to much potential, and was very personable, but says that all changed when he was elected governor.

Moffitt says while it hasn't happened up to now, Blagojevich's sentences puts an end to what he calls a sad political chapter.
