Aldermen Approve Use of Contest Money
The money won by the City of Galesburg in the Readers Digest "We Hear You, America" contest will officially be going to the Galesburg Community Foundation.

The Galesburg City Council this week entered into what's called a "Field of Interest Agreement" with the Foundation, so that the 25-thousand dollars won by the city will go to an endowment fund the foundation is setting up, 25-thousand dollars over this fiscal year and next will be matched by the city.

Galesburg Community Foundation Executive Director Josh Gibb told aldermen what the Community Foundation wants to do with the money isn't being done anywhere else.

"Most of them are taking their winnings and spending it on something immediate," Gibb said. "This actually creates something to create revenue to fund programs and projects, to remind us of this contest forever as a permanent endowment within the community foundation."

The City Council vote on the deal was seven-to-one. Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming was the lone "no" vote, saying he only objects to the city matching the 25-thousand dollars. He says the public should hopefully give to the fund, but only if they want to, not through the use of taxpayer money.

The distribution of money generated from the endowment will be handled by a committee consisting of the mayor, a foundation representative, and the head of the Knox County United Way.
