Annual Adult Service to Youth Awards Handed Down in Galesburg
Galesburg's Mayor Sal Garza this week through a proclamation honored two individuals worthy of adult service to youth commemoration.

The first honor of the Annual Adult Service to Youth Award went to Galesburg Youth Athletic Club founder, Chris Duncan.

He says his service to young people runs depper than just training youth boxers.

"The boxing is nice, but it's only a small percent of a person's life," Duncan said. I'm 70 years old now and as long as I can continue to do what I'm doing I'll be doing it. Thank you to the city, thank you."

The second recipient of the award was Galesburg's Gina Van Winkle. She has volunteered her efforts to individuals with special needs for 25 years.

"In that time, I've grown to love the individual, the same ideals we instill in our athletes as Carlos said, to those with special needs," she said. "They have such a giving spirit, I couldn't find myself to do something different."

The Adult Service to Youth Award is established through the city and the Galesburg Youth Commission.

They are awarded annually to recognize residents who exemplify excellence in serving the youth through volunteering.
